The Louisiana Purchase has caused multiple political effects that have greatly altered the United States development course. For starters, the Louisiana Purchase avoided war with France, a major superpower at the time. Jefferson realized the importance of the port of New Orleans.

The first impact is that it doubled the size of the country. Our borders went from the Atlantic Ocean to the Rocky Mountains, north to Canada, and south to the boundary with Spanish Florida. It helped to secure the port of New Orleans and the use of the Mississippi river for us.

A positive effect of the Louisiana purchase was that people were allowed to go out into the wilderness and fend for themselves, while gathering plenty of resources. This made society more democratic, which greatly helped Jackson during his presidential campaign.

Even Jefferson’s own party, the Democratic-Republicans, supported a resolution that would keep 80,000 men ready to march at a moment’s notice. This bravado arose largely because Napoleon’s powerful army had yet to arrive in Louisiana.

France cedes New Orleans and Louisiana west of the Mississippi to Spain. France cedes territories east of the Mississippi and north of New Orleans to Britain. Treaty of Paris gives newly independent United States free access to the Mississippi. Spain closes lower Mississippi and New Orleans to foreigners.

President Thomas Jefferson had many reasons for wanting to acquire the Louisiana Territory. The reasons included future protection, expansion, prosperity and the mystery of unknown lands. President Jefferson knew that the nation that discovered this passage first would control the destiny of the continent as a whole.
