Known for such works as “The Descent from the Cross,” “Wolf and Fox Hunt,” “Peace and War,” “Self-Portrait with Helena and Peter Paul” and “The Garden of Love,” Rubens’s style combined a knowledge of Renaissance classicism with lush brushwork and a lively realism. He died in 1640.

The Elevation of the Cross Rubens was commissioned to paint his first major altarpiece in 1610 after returning to Antwerp from Italy. The painting, inspired by the biblical story from the Gospel of Matthew, depicts Christ on his Crucifix as it is being raised to the upright position.

The art of Peter Paul Rubens is a fusion of the traditions of Flemish realism with the Classicizing tendencies of the Italian Renaissance. Rubens was able to infuse his own astounding vitality into a powerful and exuberant style that came to epitomize the Baroque art of the 17th century.

His unique and immensely popular Baroque style emphasized movement, colour, and sensuality, which followed the immediate, dramatic artistic style promoted in the Counter-Reformation. Rubens was a painter producing altarpieces, portraits, landscapes, and history paintings of mythological and allegorical subjects.

At age 14, Rubens became an apprentice to landscape painter Tobias Verhaecht, but he moved on after a year to study under the more acclaimed history and portrait painter, Adam van Noort.
