From 1797 until 1833, Carmel Mission was the headquarters of all Alta California missions. It was headed by Saint Junípero Serra from 1770 until his death in 1784. It was also the seat of the second missions presidente, Father Fermín Francisco de Lasuén, who was in charge of completing nine more mission churches.

Records for the missions and a library of 2,500 volumes were housed at Carmel, which served as a personnel and supply center for the founding of new missions and the strengthening of old ones. Both Serra and Lasuén are buried at the mission.

The mission now serves as an active parish church of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Monterey, with regular services throughout the week and on Sundays. It is also an entertainment venue for special events and concerts performed on the Casavant organ complete with horizontal trumpets for the basilica.

LOS ANGELES — The Federal Aviation Administration announced on Thursday that it had cleared Harrison Ford to continue flying, after the actor completed remedial training prompted by an incident in April when he had crossed a runway by accident. Ford has never been shy about admitting to errors.

In 2015, the actor was injured when he crash-landed his vintage plane on a golf course in Los Angeles. Ford took up flying when he was in his 50s and is also trained to fly helicopters. In 1999, he crash-landed his helicopter during a training flight in Los Angeles but both he and the instructor were unhurt.

“Actor and pilot Harrison Ford was involved in a runway incursion April 24th at the Hawthorne Airport,” the statement read. “Mr. Ford crossed the airport’s only runway in his aircraft after he misheard a radio instruction from ATC. The actor wasn’t fined and didn’t lose his pilot’s license as a result of the incident.
