PNG format is a lossless compression file format, which makes it a common choice for use on the Web. PNG is a good choice for storing line drawings, text, and iconic graphics at a small file size. JPG format is a lossy compressed file format. This makes it useful for storing photographs at a smaller size than a BMP.

The PNG (Portable Network Graphics) format comes close to TIFF in quality and is ideal for complex images. Unlike JPEG, TIFF uses a lossless compression algorithm in order to preserve as much quality in the image. The more detail you require in graphics, the better PNG is for the task.

Professional photographers generally capture in RAW format (even if the final file needed is a JPEG), convert those files to DNGs, then edit in software such as Photoshop or Lightroom.

How to convert PNG to JPG using Windows

1. Open the selected PNG file in the Microsoft Paint program.
2. Select ‘File’, click ‘Save as’
3. Type the desired file name in the ‘File name’ space.
4. Click the ‘Save as type’ dropdown menu and select ‘JPEG’
5. Click ‘Save’ and the file will be saved into the selected destination.

In order to change the resolution of your image, you will need a photo editing program (Photoshop, Windows Paint, Picnik, PhotoScape, etc). If you need a hi-resolution image, but at a smaller size, you can simply change the scale of the image to what you need, assuming your image was of high resolution, to begin with.

Open your image in Preview. Go to Tools > Adjust size… In the Resolution box you’ll see the DPI of your image. If it’s different than 300, uncheck the “Resample image” box and enter your desired DPI (300).

Converting the image from 72dpi to 300dpi will reduce the overall size of the image to just over 1/18 of the original size. If the image is big enough to be reduced by that much then there is no problem. If reducing the image by that much makes it too small then the image can’t be converted.

An image DPI value may be changed by opening the file inside MS (Microsoft) Paint, Adobe Photoshop or Illustrator. You may change your DPI to any value you like. One other thing to note is that the DPI value of a digital image is sometimes also referred to as PPI (or Pixels Per Inch).

1. Open your photo.
2. Click Tools > Adjust size.
3. Make sure to uncheck the Resample Image box.
4. Type in a higher width and height.
5. Your resolution should be exactly 300 pixels per inch or more if you’re printing a picture into a larger photo size.

The Apple iPhone displays images at 132 dpi. 200 or 300 dpi is for printing on paper which requires a finer resolution of 200 or 300 pixels for every inch. This does not affect the file size (resolution, image size) of the photo itself, just how it is displayed. On the Web, that would be 600/72 pixels=8.3 inches wide.
