If you refer to the title of a source within your paper, capitalize all words that are four letters long or greater within the title of a source: Permanence and Change. Exceptions apply to short words that are verbs, nouns, pronouns, adjectives, and adverbs: Writing New Media, There Is Nothing Left to Lose.

APA in-text citation style uses the author’s last name and the year of publication, for example: (Field, 2005). For direct quotations, include the page number as well, for example: (Field, 2005, p. 14).

Title of the article. Only the first word of the title and subtitle and proper nouns are capitalized. Title of the Journal, Note: Italicize and capitalize each word in the journal. Volume Note: Italicize the journal volume. If there is no issue, include a comma before the page range.

APA 7th is an ‘author/date’ system, so your in-text references for all formats (book, journal article, web document) consists of the author(s) surname and year of publication. The basics of an in-text reference in APA: Include author or authors and year of publication.

To write the the name of an article title in the body of your paper:

1. The title of the article should be in quotation marks – Example: “Tiger Woman on Wall Street”
2. Capitalize all the major words.

The title of an article is not italicized in MLA style, but placed in quotation marks. This applies to articles from journals, newspapers, websites, or any other publication. Use italics for the title of the source where the article was published.

Italicize titles if the source is self-contained and independent. Titles of books, plays, films, periodicals, databases, and websites are italicized. Place titles in quotation marks if the source is part of a larger work. Articles, essays, chapters, poems, webpages, songs, and speeches are placed in quotation marks.

TEXTS:

1. Introduce the text you’re writing about in the beginning of your essay by mentioning the author’s full name and the complete title of the work. Titles of books should be underlined or put in italics.
2. In subsequent references to the author, use his or her last name.

A general rule of thumb is that within the text of a paper, italicize the title of complete works but put quotation marks around titles of parts within a complete work.

• Examples (e.g. illustrations of your points)
• Statistics (e.g. facts, figures, diagrams)

The introductory paragraph of any paper, long or short, should start with a sentence that piques the interest of your readers. In a well-constructed first paragraph, that first sentence leads into three or four sentences that provide details about the subject you address in the body of your essay.

On a paragraph level, these words and phrases are used to connect large ideas. However, on a sentence level, these words and phrases are also considered to be introductory. Examples: However, On the other hand, Furthermore, Therefore, Thereafter, Consequently, Next, Finally, In conclusion, For example, Ultimately, etc.

Example. Here’s an introductory paragraph for a paper I wrote. I started the paper with a factoid, then presented each main point of my paper and then ended with my thesis statement. I lead with a quick factoid about comics.

When you quote directly from a source, enclose the quoted section in quotation marks. Add an in-text citation at the end of the quote with the author name and page number, like this: “Here’s a direct quote” (Smith 8). “Here’s a direct quote” (“Trouble” 22).

If you are directly quoting from a work, you will need to include the author, year of publication, and page number for the reference (preceded by “p.” for a single page and “pp.” for a span of multiple pages, with the page numbers separated by an en dash).

Using In-text Citation APA in-text citation style uses the author’s last name and the year of publication, for example: (Field, 2005). For direct quotations, include the page number as well, for example: (Field, 2005, p. 14). For sources such as websites and e-books that have no page numbers, use a paragraph number.

The term indirect quote is a currency quotation in the foreign exchange market that expresses the variable amount of foreign currency required to buy or sell one unit of the domestic currency.

Cite by listing the article’s author, putting the title of the article in quotations marks, and italicizing the periodical title. Follow with the date of publication. Remember to abbreviate the month.

Notice that, in every style, the journal title is listed after the article title. Citations for magazine and newspaper articles are the same in this regard (that is, the periodical title will be the second title that you see). APA: Title of article. Source with No Title Note: For sources with no title, describe the source in brackets in place of the title. Author, A. A., & Author, A. A. (Year of Publication). [Description of source] Format the remainder according to resource type. Smith, F.

If the document contains headings but no page numbers or paragraph numbers, use the heading plus a paragraph number within that section.

Use “n.d.” (“no date”) in place of date. Describe the source in brackets. Use title in place of author; use “n.d.” in place of date….No title.

Cite in text the first few words of the reference list entry (usually the title) and the year. Use double quotation marks around the title or abbreviated title.: (“All 33 Chile Miners,” 2010). Note: Use the full title of the web page if it is short for the parenthetical citation.

Unknown Author If the work does not have an author, cite the source by its title in the signal phrase or use the first word or two in the parentheses. Titles of books and reports are italicized; titles of articles, chapters, and web pages are in quotation marks.

Website with no author and no date

1. Bibliographic references are double-spaced and indented half an inch after the first line.
2. If there is no author, the article title comes first.
3. If there is no date, use the abbreviation n.d.
4. It is no longer necessary to include the date of retrieval.
