Aluminum. The name aluminum is derived from the ancient name for alum (potassium aluminum sulphate), which was alumen (Latin, meaning bitter salt). Aluminum was the original name given to the element by Humphry Davy but others called it aluminum and that became the accepted name in Europe.

English chemist Sir Humphry Davy named the element alumium in 1808 and then changed it to aluminum in 1812. British editors changed it to aluminium to be more in keeping with other elements such as potassium and sodium, while the Americans retained the spelling as aluminum.

But no element on the periodic table has had quite as strange a ride as aluminum. Aluminum is the most common metal in the earth’s crust, almost twice as abundant as iron. In fact, aluminum became more precious than gold and silver in the 19th century, because it was harder to obtain.

With global growth picking up and aluminum players finally cutting capacity due to shrinking margins (as alumina prices increased), aluminum deficit led to rising prices in the last 3 years. With concerns over global economic growth and slowing industrial growth in China, aluminum prices decreased in 2019.

It is clear that in a world without aluminium, whilst we may have been able to live relatively similar lives, we would not have achieved as much as quickly, and we would not have a number of modern conveniences which we currently enjoy and take for granted.

Some of the metals listed below are available as commercially pure and many can be manufactured to be extremely pure, often 99.999% minimum, referred to as “five nines min.” For example, Aluminum 1100 is considered to be commercially pure aluminum – it is 99% pure minimum.

Pure aluminium of 99% or higher purity (A1 99.5, with iron and silicon as the major impurities) has many applications, for example in packaging and electronics. These alloys have good formability and corrosion resistance, high thermal and electrical conductivity, low mechanical properties and excellent workability.

Lightweight, durable and highly recyclable, aluminum has become an essential element of daily life. Aluminum is truly the metal of modern life.

Steel is strong and less likely to warp, deform or bend underweight, force or heat. Nevertheless, the strength of steel’s tradeoff is that steel is much heavier/much denser than aluminum. Steel is typically 2.5 times denser than aluminum.

Aluminum was born out of science. Aluminum isn’t naturally found in the Earth’s crust. It comes from bauxite, which has to be processed to get aluminum. Essentially, innovation made this metal possible.As an interesting fact, Danish chemist Hans Christian Oersted first extracted aluminum from alum in 1825.

Human exposure to aluminium is inevitable and, perhaps, inestimable. Aluminium’s free metal cation, Alaq(3+), is highly biologically reactive and biologically available aluminium is non-essential and essentially toxic.

In 1965, researchers found that rabbits injected with an extremely high dose of aluminium developed toxic tau tangles in their brains. This led to speculation that aluminium from cans, cookware, processed foods and even the water supply could be causing dementia.

No known physiologic need exists for aluminum; however, because of its atomic size and electric charge (0.051 nm and 3+, respectively), it is sometimes a competitive inhibitor of several essential elements with similar characteristics, such as magnesium (0.066 nm, 2+), calcium (0.099 nm, 2+), and iron (0.064 nm, 3+).
