Austria-Hungary or the Austro-Hungarian Empire was a state in Central Europe from 1867 to 1918. It was the countries of Austria and Hungary ruled by a single monarch. The full name of the empire was “The Kingdoms and Lands Represented in the Imperial Council and the Lands of the Crown of St. Stephen”.

Austria is a small, predominantly mountainous country located in south-central Europe. It is twice the size of Switzerland and slightly smaller than the State of Maine. Most of the country is Alpine or sub-Alpine, that have heavily wooded mountains and hills cut by valleys of fast-flowing rivers.

Geography. Hungary is a landlocked country, situated in the Carpathian Basin. Its two longest rivers called Danube and Tisza divide Hungary into three parts: Transdanubia (to the west of the Danube), the plain between the Rivers Danube and Tisza, and the Trans-Tisza region (to the east of the Tisza).

The result was the 1867 Austro-Hungarian Compromise, which saw our “Habsburg Empire” (now the Austrian Empire) officially morph into Austria-Hungary, also known as the Austro-Hungarian Empire. This change effectively split the empire into two semi-independent halves: the Kingdom of Hungary and the Austrian Empire.

The dissolution of Austria-Hungary was a major geopolitical event that occurred as a result of the growth of internal social contradictions and the separation of different parts of Austria-Hungary. The reason for the collapse of the state was World War I, the 1918 crop failure and the economic crisis.

Landform regions. Austria may be divided into three unequal geographical areas. The largest part of Austria (62%) is occupied by the relatively young mountains of the Alps, but in the east, these give way to a part of the Pannonian plain, and north of the Danube River lies the Bohemian Forest, an older, but lower, granite mountain range.
