Westminster Abbey

Eight British Prime Ministers are buried in the Abbey; William Pitt the Elder, William Pitt the Younger, George Canning, Henry John Temple, 3rd Viscount Palmerston, William Ewart Gladstone, Bonar Law, Neville Chamberlain and Clement Attlee.

The physicist, who died in March at 76, was laid to rest in the Scientists’ Corner, between Isaac Newton and Charles Darwin.

It is known however that she contracted smallpox in 1562 which left her face scarred. She took to wearing white lead makeup to cover the scars.

King George III

Visit St George’s Chapel St George’s Chapel is a place of worship. At least three services take place in the chapel every day, and worshippers are welcome to attend. On Sunday the Chapel is closed to visitors – all are welcome to attend services.

Edward, Prince of Wales, and Princess Alexandra of Denmark in 1863 (later King Edward VII and Queen Alexandra respectively) Princess Helena and Prince Christian of Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg-Augustenburg in 1866. Princess Louise and the Marquess of Lorne (later Duke of Argyll) in 1871.

Three former kings have remained buried in the Royal Vaults below the chapel. They are George III, George IV and William IV. Henry VIII, Jane Seymour and Charles I were all buried beneath the Chapel before the construction of the vaults in 1810.

The Royal Vault at Windsor was created between 1804 and 1810 for George III, who died in 1820 and is one of three kings buried there. It is where the Queen will be laid to rest when she dies, at which point Philip will be moved there to join his wife of 73 years.

It was not until 1967 that the duke and duchess were invited to attend an official public ceremony, the unveiling of a plaque dedicated to Queen Mary. Edward died in Paris in 1972 but was buried at Frogmore, on the grounds of Windsor Castle. In 1986, Wallis died and was buried at his side.
