Gill (गिल) Gela (गेला) Gull (गुल) Ghilawa (घीलावा) is a Gotra or surname found in the Jat community mainly in Rajasthan, Haryana, Maharashtra, Himachal Pradesh and Punjab in India and Pakistan. Dilip Singh Ahlawat has mentioned it as one of the ruling Jat clans in Central Asia.

A gill (/ɡɪl/ ( listen)) is a respiratory organ found in many aquatic organisms that extracts dissolved oxygen from water and excretes carbon dioxide. The gills of some species, such as hermit crabs, have adapted to allow respiration on land provided they are kept moist.

Sharks are a group of elasmobranch fish characterized by a cartilaginous skeleton, five to seven gill slits on the sides of the head, and pectoral fins that are not fused to the head. Modern sharks are classified within the clade Selachimorpha (or Selachii) and are the sister group to the rays.

The water enters the mouth and passes through the feathery filaments of the fish’s gills, which are rich in blood. These gill filaments absorb oxygen from the water and move it into the bloodstream. At the same time, waste carbon dioxide in the blood passes out through the gills into the water.

Even though fish can live their lives underwater, they still need oxygen to “breathe”. Instead of breathing air, fish must get their oxygen from the water. This process requires large volumes of water to pass through absorption surfaces to get enough oxygen into their bodies using their mouths and gills.

Sharks have a tongue referred to as a basihyal. The basihyal is a small, thick piece of cartilage located on the floor of the mouth of sharks and other fishes. It appears to be useless for most sharks with the exception of the cookiecutter shark.

They let air out in the form of a fart when they want to lose buoyancy. As for other shark species, well we really just don’t know! Though the Smithsonian Animal Answer Guide confirms that captive sand tiger sharks have been known to expel gas bubbles out their cloaca, there really isn’t much else out there about this.

Port Jackson sharks do the same thing, carrying the egg cases in their mouth until they find a safe spot. That’s about the extent of an oviparous shark’s parental commitment, though. The embryo is nourished by the yolk in the egg sac and chews itself out when it is fully developed.
