The United States is a representative democracy. This means that our government is elected by citizens. Here, citizens vote for their government officials. These officials represent the citizens’ ideas and concerns in government.

Direct democracy, which is also called pure democracy is a democracy in which the decisions are not taken by representatives. All decisions are voted on by the people. When a budget or law needs to be passed, then the idea goes to the people. Large governments rarely make decisions this way.

The pure form of direct democracy exists only in the Swiss cantons of Appenzell Innerrhoden and Glarus. The process of direct democracy was quite simple as people gathered on the streets and took unanimous decisions however in modern context, when population has increased to huge level it is not possible to practice direct democracy.

In the situations that a representative democracy work better than a direct democracy is for example in school when one votes on student council or in a town hall meeting in which all citizens vote on proposed city ordinance and they elect only a mayor, no city council.

Advantages of representative democracy, especially as opposed to direct democracy, include that: the people cannot be expected to have the time or interest to make important and regular decisions. representatives can educate the public on political issues.
