In Scrabble in North America, the only acceptable words with a Q and not a U are qi, qat, qaid, qai, qadi, qoph, qanat, tranq, faqir, sheqel, qabala, qabalah, qindar, qintar, qindarka, mbaqanga, and qwerty, along with their plurals (such as qats and sheqalim).

Blending is linked to reading, segmenting linked to writing. Therefore, blending should come before segmenting, as you want to get children starting to read some words before they need to start writing them. Also, blending is a slightly easier skill to master as it relies more on listening.

A couple key things to remember when teaching students to blend sounds

6. Have Students Use their Hands and Fingers.
7. Make Stop Sounds Quick.

Ten oral blending activities

1. Give Instructions.
2. Use a puppet or toy.
3. Say something wrong.
4. Hide simple items in a sound box.
5. Have some small objects set out.
6. At home time or play time, give out cards that feature pictures of CVC words.
7. Play the above game in reverse.
8. Play ‘I Spy’ using sound-talk.

The most effective reading instruction includes modeling followed by guided support. As you sit with your child, model the correct blending of a word. Start by saying the sounds slowly and continue to guide them by saying the sounds faster and faster until they are able to discern the word.

First, ask your learners to cover up the last letter in the CVC word. They should then start on the dot and say the first letter’s sound /s/. They move onto the second letter /a/. Once those two sounds are there, encourage them to go ahead and blend the two sounds /saaaa/.

To blend in better in social situations, try observing, rather than taking action. Observe how others around you socialize and communicate. You can then hang out and simply watch, rather than participate, in conversations. When you are observing others, you may also notice how certain groups socialize with each other.
