The Martian south polar cap is a layer of carbon dioxide ice, full of pits that make it look like Swiss cheese. The pits form when the Sun heats the ice and makes it sublimate (transform from a solid to a gas).

Children’s fairytales tell us that the moon is made of cheese, but like all bodies in the solar system, rock is the more realistic ingredient. The moon’s surface is covered with dead volcanoes, impact craters, and lava flows, some visible to the unaided stargazer.

Moon would expand and oceans would form For starters, the moon would expand out more than 500 miles in diameter, since cheese is less dense than rock. Then, the water and casein protein that make up the cheese would begin to separate out, with caseins moving closer to the core of the moon.

For instance, in 1902 it was found that the most common theory as to what the Moon was made of according to children in the United States was that it was made of cheese. So other than lunatics and children who were told so by their parents via fables, nobody seriously ever thought the Moon was made of cheese.

The moon incites children’s curiosity from a very young age. Although it’s a space object, it’s more accessible to children because of its dependability and proximity. Through this short unit, children will develop a deeper understanding of the moon.
