The Spire was ‘twisted’ when unseasoned wood was used during its construction with 32 tons of lead tiles placed on top and as the timber dried out the weight of the lead twisted the spire. As a result, less experienced men completed the job and they made the mistake of using green timber.

On 11 March 1861 the church spire was struck by lightning, which snapped the gas lighting pipes in the tower, starting a fire in a beam next to the wooden roof of the chancel. The fire smouldered for three and a half hours until it was discovered by the Sexton on his nightly round to ring the midnight bell.

The large supporting pillars at the corners of the spire are seen to bend inwards under the stress. The addition of reinforcing tie-beams above the crossing, designed by Christopher Wren in 1668, halted further deformation. The beams were hidden by a false ceiling installed below the lantern stage of the tower.

Earth is the planet we live on. It is the only planet in the Solar System with liquid water on its surface. It is also the only planet we know to have life on it. Earth is also known as Terra.

Earth. Earth—our home planet—is the only place we know of so far that’s inhabited by living things. It’s also the only planet in our solar system with liquid water on the surface.

It is the pull of the Moon’s gravity on the Earth that holds our planet in place. Without the Moon stabilising our tilt, it is possible that the Earth’s tilt could vary wildly. It would move from no tilt (which means no seasons) to a large tilt (which means extreme weather and even ice ages).

Fortunately, Earth retains heat fairly well, so humans wouldn’t freeze instantly. Life would get much more difficult immediately, though. Without the Sun’s rays, all photosynthesis on Earth would stop. All plants would die and, eventually, all animals that rely on plants for food — including humans — would die, too.

The Moon also holds Earth’s 23.5-degree tilt fairly steady. Without that steadying hand, Earth would wobble much more, dramatically affecting the planet’s seasons and climate. The change in Earth’s tilt would happen gradually, though, so we wouldn’t notice it instantly or likely even within our lifetime.

Assuming that the earth stops suddenly for 42 seconds and then starts spinning again at its normal speed, here’s what would happen: 1. If the earth stops spinning suddenly, the atmosphere will continue to spin. The winds will also cause erosion to the earth’s crust.
