The Giver Chapter 1 and 2 Characters

Jonas is thinking about the upcoming December ceremony where he will be told what job he will have for the rest of his life. The Committee of Elders will decide which job best fits his qualifications. Jonas is trying to decide what word best describes how he feels about the ceremony.

Jonas is the protagonist of The Giver.

He was excited for Asher, but Asher was jealous of Jonas’s assignment. Jonas was excited for Asher, but he felt like things weren’t quite the same. He was jealous of Asher’s assignment, so Jonas was rude to Asher.

Jonas’s friend Asher demonstrates the community’s inability to truly enforce Sameness, and provides an example of a person for whom life in the community is not entirely comfortable.

In Chapter 13, The Giver transmits a painful memory of an elephant hunt to Jonas, during which an elephant is shot and killed for its tusks.

4, why did Larissa “chortle with laughter” and “hoot” at Jonas’s words words? They were laughing because their parents had said the same thing about bathing the old. They were laughing because they enjoyed working in the House of the Old.

When an elderly person is released, they enter the room through a “special door.” Larissa, an elderly person, explains the process to Jonas. She also notes that the room is not large. The committee members seem to be the only people who know what happens in the Release Room.

How did Jonas decide he felt? What was causing this feeling? Jonas felt apprehensive because the Ceremony of Twelve is coming up in December. They share feelings that they felt today.

Why are Jonas and Larissa laughing at the end of chapter 4? Jonas told a funny joke.

Once in the bathing room, Jonas sets to bathing an old woman. The old woman, whose name is Larissa, tells Jonas about the release that happened earlier that day. At these events, they always tell the life story of the person who’s getting released—just think of it as an obituary.

In chapter four Jonas rides his bicycle to the House of the Old where he sees the bicycles of his friend Asher and a girl named Fiona there already. The elevens need to put in volunteer hours at many places so that the elders can find what job suits them best.

The Giver Chapters 1-2

For example, in Jonas’s society, every member celebrates his or her birthday on the same day in December. Jonas reflects, “He could remember the Decembers back to when he had become, well, probably a Four” (11). However, in our society, every person celebrates his/her own birthday on the date of his/her birth.

People in The Giver do not celebrate individual birthdays. Any child born in a given year has the same birthday and the same age. Age is not an actual number, it is a category for grouping children.
