The Impressionist Movement is a 19th century Modernist Art movement. Impressionism emerged in France as an ‘Avant Guarde’ art style. It began alongside a number of other painters who were also exploring ‘Plein-air’ painting. At first the public was hostile towards the developing movement.

Modernism, in the fine arts, a break with the past and the concurrent search for new forms of expression. Modernism fostered a period of experimentation in the arts from the late 19th to the mid-20th century, particularly in the years following World War I.

Modernity theory approaches modern experience as it incorporates a sense of itself as ‘modern’ (modernity), along with the possibilities and limitations of representing this in the arts and culture generally (modernism). The book interrogates modernity in the name of a fluid, unsettled, unsettling modernism.

Philosophers and other thinkers of the age began to eschew both religious dogmatism and moral pragmatism as the dominant concepts used to order human civilization, in favor of something else. Modernity, rather, placed the prerogative for change and improvement of civilization in the hands of human beings themselves.

More specifically, modernity was associated with individual subjectivity, scientific explanation and rationalization, a decline in emphasis on religious worldviews, the emergence of bureaucracy, rapid urbanization, the rise of nation-states, and accelerated financial exchange and communication.

Tradition and Modernity are not contradictory or exclusive. They are merely two different classes of things which can however interact beneficially. Tradition is still very often considered as a “thing of the past” without any contemporary legitimacy, and modernity is often mistakingly considered as modernism.

What is the difference between Modernity and Modernism? Modernity is a time period whereas modernism refers to the trends in art, culture and social relations that are characterized by development of a modern world.
