Today's episode began with Queen Rhaenyra desperately looking for new Dragonriders for three dragons without a champion on her side. As a result, she decided to go along with her son's idea of seeking dragon riders outside of Targaryen blood. Among them is Ser Steffon, who hails from House Darklyn. Lord Gunthor Darklyn of Duskendale is the father of Steffon, who was executed earlier by Criston Cole in episode 4.

Ser Steffon took an oath to serve as Jaehaerys I's Kingsguard and then used to serve Viserys Targaryen as part of his Kingsguard. Finally, he became Lord Commander of his daughter, Rhaenyra Targaryen's Queensguard. Rhaenyra acknowledged Steffon's origins, noting that he is of noble birth. In the history books it is mentioned that the Darklyns and Targaryens shared ancestry (similar to the Velaryons).

Rhaenyra also mentioned Steffon's lineage, specifically mentioning that his maternal grandmother was Aeriana, a Targaryen princess. Therefore, since he had some Targaryen blood in him, Rhaenyra wanted to see if her loyal knight could become a new dragon rider. Steffon also knew the risk and he proved his loyalty to his queen by going ahead with this plan to capture the Seasmoke dragon.
