Spam is rarely sent directly by a company advertising itself. It’s usually sent by a “spammer,” a company in the business of distributing unsolicited email. An advertiser enters into an agreement with a spammer, who generates email advertisements to a group of unsuspecting recipients.

Whether a message is spam does not answer whether it is illegal. In fact, SPAM IS LEGAL in the United States. So to reiterate: It is legal in the U.S. to send an unsolicited commercial email.

In voice phishing—or “vishing”—scams, callers impersonate legitimate companies to steal money and personal and financial information. And these scams are on the rise. In fact, the Federal Trade Commission reports that 77 percent of its fraud complaints involve contact with consumers by telephone.

Robocalls that hang up immediately are usually meant to verify your number. It means that the machine wants to confirm that the number is active and that a real person answered the phone. The technology that most scammers use generates phone numbers based on just one number from a specific area or a specific operator.

They designate these calls as SPAM and display a “SPAM” message on the Display of the receiving phone. Also, Smartphone apps are available in the Apple and Android App Stores that will monitor your incoming calls and display a “SPAM” or “SCAM” message on the phone display.

However, the steps aren’t the same, so here’s what you’ll need to know:

1. From your home screen, open the Phone app.
2. Tap the Menu icon, located at the top right.
3. Select Settings and then tap Block settings.
4. Choose Blocked numbers and add a number with the Plus icon.
5. Once you enter the number, select Block.

Enter *67 and then the number you want to block from seeing your caller ID info. Other ways to stop nuisance calls: Add your number to the free National Do Not Call Registry by calling 888.382. 1222 or going to www.donotcall.gov.

Here are the simple steps to block a specific number from your log of recent calls.

Go into Settings->Phone->Call Blocking & Identification and you can add numbers and emails to block. Once added, calls or Messages from the number/email are blocked – you won’t receive any notification when they call.

How to block unknown calls on your Android

1. Tap the phone icon on your Android, which is usually at the bottom of the home screen.
2. Tap the three dots at the top of the Phone app screen.
3. Tap “Settings” in the dropdown menu.
4. Tap “Block numbers” and then toggle the button beside “Block unknown callers” to green.

Mark calls as spam

1. Open your device’s Phone app .
2. Go to Recent calls .
3. Tap the call you want to report as spam.
4. Tap Block / report spam. You’ll be asked if you want to block the number.
5. If you have the option, tap Report call as spam.
6. Tap Block.

If you phone is saying “Unknown” it means that no Caller ID was sent with the call. Might be from someone that they do not want you to call them back. It could also be from various law enforcement agencies. They often have Caller ID blocked for fairly obvious reasons.
