When Columbus arrived back in Spain on March 15, 1493, he immediately wrote a letter announcing his discoveries to King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella, who had helped finance his trip.

THE CONTRACT In January 1492, after six years of deliberating and delaying, the king and queen of Spain finally agreed to finance Columbus’s first voyage.

Queen Isabella refused Columbus at first. Later King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella gave Columbus three ships, a crew of about ninety men, and some money. The three ships were the Niña, Pinta, and Santa María.

King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella of Spain agreed to fund his voyage because they believed that if a whole new sea route was to be discovered that landed in the Indies it would help Spain have the upper hand in the competition against Portugal.

Columbus called all the people he met in the islands ‘Indians’, because he was sure that he had reached the Indies. This initial encounter opened up the ‘New World’ to European colonisation, which would come to have a devastating impact on indigenous populations.

Reasons why the King and Queen of Spain supported Columbus’s voyage include that they hoped to find a new route to the Spice Islands and that they sought trading advantages over the Portuguese.

Columbus promised his benefactors, King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella of Spain, to bring back gold, spices, and silks from the Far East, to spread Christianity, and to lead an expedition to China.

Apparently, Columbus died without knowing that the land he had discovered wasn’t Asia. Amerigo Vespucci is the first one who had a doubt about it, which has been confirmed by further explorations, which can explain why the continent has been named America…

*Columbus didn’t “discover” America — he never set foot in North America. During four separate trips that started with the one in 1492, Columbus landed on various Caribbean islands that are now the Bahamas as well as the island later called Hispaniola. He also explored the Central and South American coasts.

People In North America Would Speak Dutch Or French If Columbus hadn’t made it to the Americas, some European voyage would have eventually reached the New World. The Portuguese might have discovered Brazil and concentrated their efforts on colonizing South America.

If the Americas had never been colonized by the Europeans, not only would many lives have been saved, but also various cultures and languages. Through colonization, the Indigenous populations were labeled as Indians, they were enslaved, and they were forced to abandon their own cultures and convert to Christianity.

If America didn’t exist but the Earth was exactly the same size, Columbus would have starved to death in the middle of the Atlantic / Pacific; Columbus only thought he had a chance of hitting Japan because he underestimated the size of the Earth dramatically.

Christopher Columbus was a navigator who explored the Americas under the flag of Spain. Some people think of him as the “discoverer” of America, but this is not strictly true. His voyages across the Atlantic paved the way for European colonization and exploitation of the Americas.

Columbus Day is a U.S. holiday that commemorates the landing of Christopher Columbus in the Americas in 1492, and Columbus Day 2021 occurs on Monday, October 11. It was unofficially celebrated in a number of cities and states as early as the 18th century, but did not become a federal holiday until 1937.

For Native people in the U.S., Columbus Day represents a celebration of genocide and dispossession. The irony is that Columbus didn’t discover anything. Not only was he lost, thinking he had landed in India, but there is significant evidence of trans-oceanic contact prior to 1492.

What is National Indigenous Peoples Day? June 21 is National Indigenous Peoples Day. This is a day for all Canadians to recognize and celebrate the unique heritage, diverse cultures and outstanding contributions of First Nations, Inuit and Métis peoples.

The states of Florida, Hawaii, Alaska, Vermont, South Dakota, New Mexico, Maine, Wisconsin, and parts of California including, for example, Los Angeles County do not recognize it and have each replaced it with celebrations of Indigenous People’s Day (in Hawaii, “Discoverers’ Day”, in South Dakota, “Native American Day” …

Well, according to the federal government, the holiday observed on the third Monday in February is officially Washington’s Birthday. But many Americans believe that this holiday is now called “Presidents’ Day,” in honor of both Presidents Washington and Lincoln, whose birthdays are Feb.

Today, cities with significant Native populations, such as Seattle, Portland, Oregon, and Los Angeles now celebrate either Native American Day or Indigenous Peoples Day. And states like Hawaii, Nevada, Minnesota, Alaska, and Maine have also formally recognized their Native populations with similar holidays.

Indigenous Peoples Day is a “holiday celebrating the original inhabitants of North America, observed instead of Columbus Day in some U.S localities,” according to the Associated Press Stylebook, with the goal to unify others as well as bring awareness to issues plaguing their communities.
