Nouns and pronouns are important parts of a language. Nouns are the objects or people of a sentence. Pronouns substitute for nouns when we want to avoid using the name of the object or person again in the sentence. Articles are the defining words that come before a noun or pronoun in a sentence.

7 Nouns are important because they identify people, places, things, and ideas. Common nouns are just that- common. They do not name anything or anyone specifically. Proper nouns DO name specific people, places, and things.

Gender pronouns are an important part of how people communicate. They take the place of nouns such as names and allow people to easily share information about themselves. Although many people use he, she, or they pronouns, there are many other pronouns that people may use.

Asking and correctly using someone’s pronouns is one of the most basic ways to show your respect for their gender identity….Here are a few you might hear:

1. They/them/theirs (Shea ate their food because they were hungry.)
2. Ze/hir/hir (Tyler ate hir food because ze was hungry.)
3. Just my name please!

Some people may choose to use multiple sets of pronouns. If someone uses more than one set of pronouns, you can ask how they would like you to use the pronouns (they may use both interchangeably, use one set on campus and another back home, etc.).
