The first character is normally used to mean “pedestal” or “stand”, but is actually a simplification of the older Chinese character 颱, which means “typhoon”; thus the word originally meant “typhoon wind”. The Ancient Greek Τυφῶν (Typhôn, “Typhon”) is related and has secondarily contaminated the word.

Well, they are all basically the same thing, but are given different names depending on where they appear. Hurricanes are tropical storms that form over the North Atlantic Ocean and Northeast Pacific. Cyclones are formed over the South Pacific and Indian Ocean. Typhoons are formed over the Northwest Pacific Ocean.

They are all the same thing: tropical storms. In the North Atlantic Ocean and Northeast Pacific, they are called hurricanes. But if the same type of disturbance takes place in the Northwest Pacific Ocean, it is known as a typhoon. And in the South Pacific and Indian Ocean, cyclone is the correct term.

When they form in the Atlantic or Eastern Pacific Oceans, tropical cyclones are called hurricanes. In the western North Pacific, the same type of storms are called typhoons. And in the South Pacific and Indian Oceans, they are called cyclones.

How do cyclones get their names? The Bureau maintains a list of names, arranged alphabetically and alternating between male and female. The first cyclone name for the 2020-21 season is highlighted. The names in red are due to be retired.

An Atlantic storm that ripped off the mast of a boat named “Antje” became known as Antje’s hurricane. In the late 1800s, they were named after Catholic saints. In 1953, the cyclones were named after women as the ships were always referred to as female and often given women’s names.

WMO maintains rotating lists of names which are appropriate for each Tropical Cyclone basin. If a cyclone is particularly deadly or costly, then its name is retired and replaced by another one.

How do they choose the names? The unique name assigned a storm is done according to a pre-defined alphabetical list, valid for the current, in this 2016/2017, tropical storm season in the world’s oceans. In Dineo’s case, this is the South-West Indian ocean region.

Typhoon Tip was the largest tropical cyclone on record, with a diameter of 1,380 mi (2,220 km)—almost double the previous record of 700 mi (1,130 km) set by Typhoon Marge in August 1951.
