Beetlejuice 2 is nearing its release date, marking Michael Keaton's return as Beetlelguese after 36 years. But since the movie was announced, people have been wondering whether or not Geena Davis and Alec Baldwin will return as the Maitlands. They both played the main characters in Beetlejuice where they die in an accident and are trapped in their house as ghosts. When a family moves into their house, they are forced to call Beetlelguese to scare them away. Tim Burton recently confirmed that Geena Davis and Alec Baldwin will not be returning in Beetlejuice 2. Here's why.

Tim Burton recently had a conversation with People, where he told them he didn't want to just "check the box" and go with a new story that doesn't involve the Maitlands. He said he wanted to make a film that brings out the story of the three generations of Deetz women and focuses mainly on Astrid played by Jenna Ortega. In his comments he said

I think the thing for me was that I didn't just want to tick a few boxes. So even though they were such a great integral part of the first one, I focused on something else. A sequel like this, it really had to do with the times. That was my hook in it, the three generations of mother, daughter, granddaughter. And that [would] be the crux of it. I couldn't have done this personally in 1989 or whatever.

So there's the reason why Tim Burton didn't include them in Beetlejuice 2, but that's not it. The absence of Alec Baldwin and Geena Davis in the film also makes sense due to certain factors that we will talk about next.
