From the time the Revolutionary War broke out, Deborah Sampson desperately wanted to join the fight for freedom and become a member of the Continental Army. The only hitch was that she couldn’t enlist as a woman.

After a childhood as an indentured servant, she worked as a school teacher for a few years. The venturesome Sampson decided to enter the Continental Army to participate in the American Revolutionary War. Assuming a man’s identity, she enlisted as “Robert Shurtleff” in the 4th Massachusetts Regiment in 1782.

Deborah Sampson became a hero of the American Revolution when she disguised herself as a man and joined the Patriot forces. She was the only woman to earn a full military pension for participation in the Revolutionary army.

The latest update to the Army’s uniform and grooming regulations, which takes effect on Friday, offers several revisions that give the 127,000 women serving in the Army and National Guard a chance to finally let their hair down — at least a bit. For the first time, women will be allowed to have buzz cuts.

Females are authorized to wear cosmetics with all uniforms, provided they are applied conservatively and in good taste and complement the uniform. Females may wear cosmetics if they are conservative and complement the uniform and their complexion.

There’s no way out of communal showers. They’re required. Everyone in your barracks will enter the shower room assigned to your barracks when commanded.

Female soldiers can now wear ponytails, braids with all Army uniforms. The change comes after the Army announced a new policy in January that authorized women could wear long ponytails during physical training, field training and combat operations to make its policies more inclusive.

There is no requirement to shave your head with a razor. b. All Female Ranger Students will have a haircut IAW Female Short Length standards in AR 670-1. AR 670-1 defines a Female Short Haircut as, “hair length that extends no more than 1 inch from the scalp (excluding bangs).

Today unless for religious purposes, all branches of the United States military bans long facial hair and long hair, as all hair styles must be cut almost in the style of a crew cut to expose the ears and neck line. They do this because the military uses hairstyle today to assert psychological control.

Soldiers may wear a wristwatch, a wrist identification bracelet, and a total of two rings (a wedding set is considered one ring) with Army uniforms, unless prohibited by the commander for safety or health reasons. Any jewelry soldiers wear must be conservative and in good taste.

You can only wear up to one bracelet and earrings that do not cross the earlobe. Male soldiers are only allowed to wear a wedding ring.

Male Authorized (and unauthorized) Hairstyles In The US Army Multiple hairstyles are now allowed as long as it maintains a neat professional appearance and doesn’t impede the use of headgear. Examples of prohibited hairstyles under this definition would include Mohawks, Horseshoes, or “Landing Strips” (see below).

You could also wear the military regulation haircut with a hard part (when the parting line is razored in). This will make the hair easier to style in the morning, but be wary as this will require more regular maintenance than if the hair was left to naturally part.

Gum: It may be considered unprofessional for your spouse to chew gum in uniform. Often, uniformed members are not allowed to carry an umbrella. In some cases, females are allowed to carry one as long as it is solid black.

Effective 22 January 2014, the U.S. military expanded its policies on religious accommodation and now allows all officer and enlisted personnel to request permission to wear beards and articles of clothing for religious reasons.
