The Loyalists were forced to leave their American homes as refugees. Some men left early in the war to join British forces headquartered in New York City or Québec City. Other families were forced to flee when their neighbours persecuted them or destroyed their homes and property.

What Happened to the Loyalists? In the end, many Loyalists simply left America. About 80,000 of them fled to Canada or Britain during or just after the war. Because Loyalists were often wealthy, educated, older, and Anglican, the American social fabric was altered by their departure.

Loyalists were American colonists who remained loyal to the British Crown during the American Revolutionary War, often referred to as Tories, Royalists or King’s Men at the time. They were opposed by the Patriots, who supported the revolution, and called them “persons inimical to the liberties of America.”

During the Revolutionary War, many loyalists were treated brutally –€” like the tarred and feathered man in this print. When the war wrapped up, loyalists often found they had to fend for themselves, or flee.

Loyalists wanted to pursue peaceful forms of protest because they believed that violence would give rise to mob rule or tyranny. They also believed that independence would mean the loss of economic benefits derived from membership in the British mercantile system. Loyalists came from all walks of life.

There are still British loyalists in North America, yes. They crossed the US/Can border during the war.

THE PATRIOTS Patriots wanted the Thirteen colonies to gain independence from Britain. They wanted to create their own laws and to form the United States of America. The Patriots wanted freedom from British rule because they didn’t think they were treated well. There were a number of famous Patriots.

Historians disagree on what percentage of colonists were Loyalists; estimates range from 20 percent to over 30 percent. In general, however, of British America’s population of 2.5 million, roughly one-third remained loyal to Great Britain, while another third committed themselves to the cause of independence.

The term Tory or “Loyalist” was used in the American Revolution for those who remained loyal to the British Crown. Since early in the 18th century, Tory had described those upholding the right of the King over Parliament.

At no time did more than 45 percent of colonists support the war, and at least a third of colonists fought for the British. Unlike the Civil War, which pitted regions against each other, the war of independence pitted neighbor against neighbor.

After French assistance helped the Continental Army force the British surrender at Yorktown, Virginia, in 1781, the Americans had effectively won their independence, though fighting would not formally end until 1783.

If the colonists had lost the war, there probably wouldn’t be a United States of America, period. A British victory in the Revolution probably would have prevented the colonists from settling into what is now the U.S. Midwest. Additionally, there wouldn’t have been a U.S. war with Mexico in the 1840s, either.

A Stunning Defeat In October 1781, the war virtually came to an end when General Cornwallis was surrounded and forced to surrender the British position at Yorktown, Virginia. Two years later, the Treaty of Paris made it official: America was independent.

Most historians have maintained that Britain had no hope of victory after 1777, but that assumption constitutes another myth of this war. Twenty-four months into its Southern Strategy, Britain was close to reclaiming substantial territory within its once-vast American empire.

Basically Canada didn’t join the americans in it’s revolutionary war because we would have been 2nd class american citizens. We would rather be 1st class British citizens.

The war ended after Lord Cornwallis’ surrendered at Yorktown in 1781. The Peace Treaty was then signed in September 1783 at Versailles. The 13 American colonies became the independent United States of America. After America became independent, Britain remained in control of Canadian territories.

England also looked at the settlement of colonies as a way of fulfilling its desire to sell more goods and resources to other countries than it bought. At the same time, the colonists could be a market for England’s manufactured goods. The English knew that establishing colonies was an expensive and risky business.

The British have far better trained troops. US Troops have proven to be the most effective. Often that effectiveness is going against training or misusing equipment.

Military personnel in the States know of the SAS and are reasonably impressed by it. In the same way as they’re impressed with their own Navy SEALS, and so on. They don’t think the SAS is measurably better than equivalent forces in the USA.

The United States is perceived to be the most powerful country again, and has the world’s largest economy and biggest military budget, spending over $732 billion on military hardware and personnel in 2019. China overtakes Russia to be seen as the second-most powerful country.
