As travel and trade in the Western hemisphere increased, the need for a canal grew increasingly more obvious. To sail from Atlantic to Pacific, ships navigated around Cape Horn, the treacherous southern extremity of South America. A canal across Panama would save incalculable miles and man-hours.

The two most important canals were the Ohio & Erie Canal completed in 1833 linking Cleveland, Columbus, and the Ohio River, and the Wabash & Erie Canal completed in 1853 linking Toledo to Evansville.

1. Canals of Venice. Referred to as “The City of Water,” Venice is the crown jewel of water cities. Romantic gondolas, and Italian architecture along the Grand Canal helped earn this status.

One of the most crucial maritime gateways in the western region, the Panama Canal provides connectivity between the Pacific and the Atlantic Ocean through the Panama isthmus- a narrow strip that separates the Caribbean Sea from the Pacific Ocean.
