The Lion King (1994) The Lion King was inspired by Hamlet, yes, but also by the Biblical stories of Joseph and Moses. Like so many Disney movies, it’s an amalgamation of different mythologies. But Scar killing his brother Mufasa to become king is taken directly from Hamlet.

Mufasa laughed at him, gave him his new nickname, and decided to move onto “more important matters.” The rejection and dismissal of his own brother is what caused Scar to become so evil and murder his own brother.

In this film, it is heavily implied Scar got his scars from challenging Mufasa for the right to rule the Pride Lands and in an attempt to win Sarabi’s affections, though she chose Mufasa over him.

Later that night, Simba has a nightmare about attempting to save his father, Mufasa, from falling into the wildebeest stampede but is stopped by Scar who then morphs into Kovu and sends Simba to his death.

Simba let out a feeble roar, but then, Simba and Nala were saved by Mufasa. Nala was heartbroken when Scar claimed that Simba died with Mufasa in the wildebeest stampede. As young adults, Nala was the lioness who brought Simba back to Pride Rock to put an end to Scar’s tyranny.

What did he do so wrong? Frankly, what Scar did wrong was to try to address social injustice. Mufasa recognized that Pride Rock was an economy of extreme scarcity: there was only enough food for the lions to live comfortably.

The biggest problem that fans seem to have with this movie can be summed up with two words: no emotion. While the animation is stunning and the animals look like you could reach out and touch them, the style lacks the range of emotion and expression that the original captured so well.

Scar is introduced as a villain who targets alchemists working for the state military from the fictional country of Amestris. Scar hails from the region of Ishval whose people were almost exterminated in a previous civil war against the state military, most notably their alchemists.

Scar and the Hyenas messed up the Circle of Life through too much predation. Basically they killed all the antelopes, way more than was necessary to feed them, and in doing so messed up the ecosystem somehow. One way this could happen is with increased wildfires.
