To cope with the extreme temperatures of their desert habitat, fennec foxes hunt by night and dig multi-chambered underground dens where they sleep with family members during the day. Fennecs are able to derive all the water they need from the food they consume.

Fennec fox mothers give birth to a litter of one to five babies (called kits).

In the wild, fennec foxes eat insects—particularly grasshoppers and locusts—as well as small rodents, lizards, birds and their eggs. They will also consume roots, fruits and leaves, which help them to hydrate.

Fennec foxes are mostly nocturnal animals. They spend most of the day in an underground burrow avoiding the desert heat. They emerge from their dens at dusk to begin the search for food. These foxes are omnivores, feasting on a variety of prey as nighttime hunters.

Fennec foxes dwell in the sandy Sahara and elsewhere in North Africa. Their nocturnal habits help them deal with the searing heat of the desert environment, and some physical adaptations help as well. The fox’s feet are also effective shovels for frequent digging—fennec foxes live in underground dens.

Some fennecs will get along with other household pets, especially dogs and cats around their size. Introduction at a young age will help them coexist more peacefully with other animals, as well as bond with their human family members. Expect to spend a lot of time and effort keeping your fennec exercised.

No matter what any breeder or fan says fennec foxes cannot be potty trained. A small percentage will instinctively use a litter box or puppy training pads nearly all the time. To foxes their waste is a marking technique to show ownership and they do not hesitate to use it.

It is legal to own a fennec fox everywhere in the United States except Missouri, Minnesota, Nevada, and Washington.

They are friendly, loving little animals with lots of energy, and can even be litter trained. However, they are still essentially wild animals and it is not really advised to keep them as a pet as they would be much happier in the wild in desert environments like where they originate from in North Africa.
