When air gets trapped in pipes, it can cause fluctuating, and spluttering water pressure as the air and water move through the pipes. Air can enter the pipes through a leaking suction line, damaged tank bladders, a faulty pump, gas build up in the well system or leaks in the pipeline.

It is poissible, too, that the well seal is leaking. Most of them seal by tightening the bolts that hold it together, which “squishes” the rubber seal against the side of the well casing. Usually when a check valve fails the water will run backwards after the pump shuts off, and the pump will start again even when no one is using water. But if you have two or more check valves, the lower one can be masking the problem of a bad upper check.
