An out-of-date or mismatched printer driver that doesn’t correlate with your hardware model and operating system version can prompt a wide range of application software misbehavior, including crashes when you attempt to adjust print settings or output your file.

Disable Add-ins If Word keeps crashing, you may find that an add-in can be the culprit. If an add-in is the issue, start your application in safe mode by holding the CTRL key down while you click on the application. You will want to restart the application after disabling each add-in to see if that helps.

In the Windows search box, type printers, and then select Printers & scanners. Select Add a printer or scanner. Under “Printers & scanners,” select Generic/Text Only. Open a Word document, and then try to print to the Generic/Text Only printer option.

Thanks in advance. This is a know issue with the HP drivers. In the printer driver go to Device settings -> Installable options -> Printer Status notification and select disable. Word 2013 was crashing on me when trying to print to an HP Printer in Windows 7.

In Windows 8 and Windows 7, you can run the printing troubleshooting wizard by selecting Start, typing printing, and then selecting Find and fix printing problems.
