Like many other companies, IKEA is experiencing shipping delays because of the coronavirus crisis, so be patient, as delivery times are running longer than usual. There’s no word yet on when IKEA delivery will return to its previous format, or what its post-pandemic format will be.

Similar to stores like Costco, IKEA leverages buying a large amount of material to drive prices down. All those materials are flat-packed so that the maximum amount of product can be shipped and stored in one place.

Why is IKEA Shipping so expensive? IKEA’s shipping model rewards people for ordering multiple items. If you end up ordering one big item only, you’ll get hit with a $49 fee, and that’s expensive. However, you can purchase multiple items for the exact same fee.

Does Ikea offer free delivery? Ikea does not offer free delivery at this time.

We aim to deliver your order within 14 days, depending on stock availability and where you live. Smaller deliveries are fulfilled by DPD Monday-Sunday* at a cost of £3.95 or £9.95 depending on the size of your order.

Ikea contract out their deliveries to small companies. Or see what it says in your T&Cs about missed deliveries where it is your fault – you could be liable to pay the full delivery fee again or possibly storage/restocking charges.

Ikea does not do holds. If you have delivery and item is there for more then 14 days after purchase then you will be charged $10 a day the items are at the store.

How Long Does IKEA Take to Deliver? Scheduling takes place within 1-2 days of completing your purchase and you can set a 4 hour delivery window to receive your items.

Production is strangled by COVID, global shipping is a wreck (remember, Ikea ships from everywhere, to everywhere – so we suffer from ALL the shipping restrictions at once), and even distribution within countries is fragmented. At the same time, demand is COLOSSAL.

The furniture comes to the store in flat packs that are cheaper to transport. The furniture stays put in that flat pack because Ikea expects some work on the part of the customer to keep the prices low. Customers assemble the furniture at home, though they can arrange for help from Ikea for a small fee.

Ikea charges the pickup fee to discourage people from not shopping in the store. Like a grocery store they make most of their money from impulse buys. People go in for a bookshelf and come out with a new kitchen.
