In general, the weather in South America is hot and humid. One of the unique features of the climate and weather in South America is El Nino, an unusual weather pattern which occurs every six or seven years. El Nino causes very hot and wet weather along the coasts of northern Peru and Ecuador from April to October.

Earth’s tilted axis causes the seasons. Throughout the year, different parts of Earth receive the Sun’s most direct rays. So, when the North Pole tilts toward the Sun, it’s summer in the Northern Hemisphere. And when the South Pole tilts toward the Sun, it’s winter in the Northern Hemisphere.

When the Northern Hemisphere is tilted toward the sun, that part of the Earth receives more direct rays of sunlight during the daytime than the Southern Hemisphere does. As a result, it is summer in the Northern Hemisphere and winter in the Southern Hemisphere.

There are only two seasons: summer, which is also the dry season, in December, January, July and August, and winter, which is also the rainy season, in April, May, October and November. That makes December a perfect month to go visit Colombia.

Regions & Seasons South America is located in the southern hemisphere. Those countries to the south of the continent have four distinct seasons.

The coldest part of the continent is in the extreme southern tip, in the area called Tierra del Fuego; in the coldest month of the year, which is July, it is as cold as 0°C (32°F) there. The highest temperature of the continent is reached in a small area of northern Argentina, and is about 42°C (108°F).

The ITCZ is responsible for the seasonal character of precipitation in South America’s extensive tropical wet-dry climatic zone. The trade winds of both hemispheres converge between the subtropical anticyclones of the Northern and Southern hemispheres in that low-pressure region.

Religion in South America has been a major influence on art, culture, philosophy and law. Christianity is the main religion, with Roman Catholics having the most adherents. Sizeable minorities of non-religious people and adherents of other religions are also present.

Other than that South America is a year round destination where the summer season takes place from November to February and the winter season lasts from June to August.

The temperate central and chilly southern parts of Argentina are still milder than the Central U.S. or Eastern Canada, because of the aforementioned lack of a large reserve of frigid air to the south of Argentina (air masses from Antarctica must cross hundreds or thousands of miles of water).
