Masashi Kishimoto played with Naruto's clothes even though he knew the fans would be extremely unhappy.

Why the "Sick Genius" Trope sucks

To make one's own work stand out requires a lot of precision understanding. Masashi Kishimoto made one of the greatest Shonen works in the world. Being a part of the Big 3 is no small feat and Naruto has left his mark on the world time and time again. The series not only helped establish many different tropes, but also inspired some of the greatest works to come later in the future.

Works like Kagurabachi and Hell's Paradise share their love for the series as do the fans. To do something of such a large scale, there has to be a certain amount of risk that helps it grow manifold. The interest must grow in many ways and there must also be an attempt to make it stand out, something Kishimoto understood early on.

During an interview with Anime News Network, Masashi Kishimoto explained the details that made Naruto such a unique manga despite following the story of ninjas. A story about ninjas was not uncommon when the mangaka began his journey but he knew it was not enough to classify his magnum opus as a shonen manga.
