The Round Table was supposedly patterned after a table made to commemorate the Last Supper of Jesus Christ. One of the seats at that table was left empty to symbolize Judas, the apostle who betrayed Jesus. King Arthur’s Round Table also had an empty seat, known as the Siege Perilous.

But when the Grail legend became part of the Arthurian legends, Lancelot and Galahad or Perceval later supplanted him, as the ideal knight. Sir Thomas Malory mentioned six knights who were better than Gawain: Lancelot, Tristram (Tristan), Bors, Perceval, Pelleas and Marhaus (Morholt).

The round table was meant to shift power from just the king who normally sat at the head of the table and spoke so everyone listened. With a round table it was symbolic of the fact that all the people seated at the table had equal weight and equal say in matters.

Though debate has gone on for centuries, historians have been unable to confirm that Arthur really existed. Though Arthur may not have been a real person, his mythic power would only grow stronger as the centuries passed.

The sword was uncovered from the river during an excavation near the ruins of medieval castle in the city of Zvecaj. It was found 36 feet underwater embedded in solid rock.

But when his adulterous affair with Guinevere is discovered, it causes a civil war that is exploited by Mordred to end Arthur’s kingdom….

Morgause was the half-sister of Arthur who married Lot. In most versions she was the mother of Gawain, Gaheris, Agravain, Gareth, and often Mordred (in some versions, he is only her nephew, son of Morgana, though she typically has a hand in raising him, usually leading to no good).

When he died – along with his illegitimate son, who may have been fighting on Arthur’s side – another such warlord rose to take his place. In the Arthurian legends, Camelot was destroyed at the end, and no one took Arthur’s throne.

One of Arthur’s knights, his son Mordred, wanted to become king and encouraged King Arthur to battle Lancelot. Mordred convinced everyone that King Arthur died in battle and Mordred overtook the throne. While in battle with his son Mordred, King Arthur died and Mordred was also fatally wounded.

In the final book of Morte D’Arthur, Gawain explicitly refers to Mordred as a “false traytoure.” In the moment when Mordred takes the throne from Arthur, Mordred is “the incarnation of treason.” He betrays Arthur as both his knight and his son, committing two acts of treason simultaneously.

Moral integrity, loyalty to one’s friends and kin, abiding by the law and defending the weak, form the cornerstone of how Arthurian fellowship has been defined through the centuries. They offer the reassurance that doing the morally right thing is valuable, even if it may bring about temporary defeat.
