The Northeast American Indians are also referred to as Eastern Woodland Indians because most lived in the forest. The Northeast region of North America is a large area with many variations of climate, landscape, and natural resources. Wigwams and longhouses were the typical shelter of Indians living in this region.

The Natives in the Northeast lived in different type of homes, the Algonquian and Siouan lived in the wickiups or wigwams, while Iroquoians lived in longhouses. With an abundance of trees in the areas, most of what the Natives produced were made of wood.

The Northeast Woodlands region extends from the Atlantic coast to the Great Lakes, and from the mid-Atlantic United States into subarctic regions of Canada.

The Eastern Woodlands Indians were native American tribes that settled in the region extending from the Atlantic Ocean in the east to the Mississippi River in the west and from Canada in the north to the Gulf of Mexico in the south.

The Three Sisters are represented by corn, beans, and squash and they’re an important facet of Indigenous culture and foodways. They’re planted in a symbiotic triad where beans are planted at the base of the corn stalks.

They found their food by hunting, fishing, and picking berries, fruits, and nuts. They also planted and ate corn, beans, and squash which Native Americans called “the three sisters.”

the Cherokee lived in longhouses. In the Cherokee tribe, men and women had different jobs that helped them meet their daily needs.

American Indian or Alaska Native – A person having origins in any of the original peoples of North and South America (including Central America) and who maintains tribal affiliation or community attachment.
