If the warning light fails to illuminate when the ignition is turned on, there are two possible causes. One is that the warning light bulb may simply have blown. This could be due to old age. The other possibility is a fault in the charging circuit – if the generator is overcharging it may cause the bulb to blow.

If the source of the clicking is electrical, the starter (a small motor energized by the battery that gets the engine running) doesn’t have enough juice to stay powered. So instead, it rapidly turns on and off and produces a clicking noise! You may need to replace your alternator or battery.

Loose or Corrosion on battery terminals When the car starter is turning over the engine, it requires a lot of power from the battery, and if the contact is bad, you can experience a clicking sound.

If the lights and/or the radio come on but the car does not start, you may also have dirty or corroded battery terminals. The terminals are what connect the electrical system to the battery. Attempting to jump start your car can also either confirm or eliminate the battery as the cause of your issue.

If your vehicle won’t start, it’s usually caused by a dying or dead battery, loose or corroded connection cables, a bad alternator or an issue with the starter. It can be hard to determine if you’re dealing with a battery or an alternator problem.

Check the starter by banging the it with something heavy, then try to start the car again. If you hear a little noise from your starter now, but the engine still won’t crank, you probably have a bad starter motor. Unbolt it and take it to a car parts store, where they’ll confirm whether the starter is toast.
