Loom bands are considered a toy and usually not allowed in school. Josephine Ariaso, a mother of two young children, first witnessed loom bands from her niece and she herself tried doing it. She admits, “Yes, it’s a craze because you see it everywhere.”

The researchers found that while Rainbow Loom’s own name-brand products were safe, some charms made by knockoff brands contained high levels of phthalates, a class of carcinogenic chemicals.

Headquartered in an industrial park in Wixom, Michigan, Ng’s company, called Choon’s Design, has since sold over 8 million units worldwide and 40 million packs of rubber bands. Ng’s company is now worth more than $130 million.

Parents are being warned about cheap imports of loom band kits, after some loom band plastic charms have been found to contain high levels of cancer-causing chemicals. The good news is that it’s not the loom bands themselves, and it’s only the cheap, imported charms that are potentially dangerous.
