U.S. military officials said that after the raid U.S. forces took the body of bin Laden to Afghanistan for identification, then buried it at sea within 24 hours of his death in accordance with Islamic tradition. Al-Qaeda confirmed the death on May 6 with posts made on militant websites, vowing to avenge the killing.

On May 2, 2011, bin Laden was shot and killed by US Navy SEALs inside a private residential compound in Abbottabad, Pakistan, where he lived with a local family from Waziristan.

Following the death of Osama bin Laden in 2011, the group has been led by Egyptian Ayman al-Zawahiri, and as of 2021 has reportedly suffered from a deterioration of central command over its regional operations.

As of 2021, the list consists of Cuba, Iran, North Korea and Syria. Countries formerly on the list were Iraq, Libya, South Yemen and Sudan.

In Afghanistan, ISIL mostly controls territory near the Pakistan border and has lost 87% of its territory since spring 2015….Territory of the Islamic State.

The Somali Civil War (Somali: Dagaalkii Sokeeye ee Soomaaliya; Arabic: الحرب الأهلية الصومالية‎) is an ongoing civil war which is taking place in Somalia. It grew out of resistance to the military junta which was led by Siad Barre during the 1980s….Somali Civil War.

The Barre regime’s oppressive policies against the Isaaq continued when in 1981, the Barre regime declared economic warfare on Somalis from the northwest and specifically the Isaaq. This was a major cause of the eventual fall of the Barre regime in 1991.

Somalia has been cited as a real-world example of a stateless society and a country with no formal legal system. The Transitional Federal Government, formed in 2004, was recognized as the central government of Somalia.

It declined from the late-1970s following Somalia’s defeat in the Ogaden War, triggering the Somali Rebellion and severing ties with the Soviet Union….Siad Barre.

The Somali population of the town was decimated following the overthrow of Iyasu V by Abyssinian militias. Today the ethnic make up of the town consists of Amhara 40.5%, Oromo 28.1%, Harari 11.8% Gurage 7.9% and Somali 6.8%.

The Somali Region (Somali: Dawlad Deegaanka Soomaalida, Amharic: ሶማሌ ክልል, Arabic: المنطقة الصومالية‎), also known as Soomaali Galbeed (Somali West) is a regional state in eastern Ethiopia. Its territory is the largest after Oromia Region.

In March 1999, Ethiopian troops reportedly raided the Somali border town of Balanballe in pursuit of members of the Al-Ittihad Al-Islamiya group which has been fighting to unite Ethiopia’s eastern Ogaden region with Somalia. The attack was apparently aimed at flushing out Ethiopian rebels based in Somalia.
