Christmas in Mainland China is not a public holiday and is not related to religion at all. It’s more of a novelty day like Valentine’s Day, rather than a religious celebration. But you’ll still see the malls and streets of the big cities filled with Christmas decorations, fir trees, Santa Claus and carols.

China Holidays & Festivals. This year, the May Day holiday will last from May 1 to 5, 2021. China has seven legal holidays in a year, including New Year’s Day, Chinese New Year (Spring Festival), Qingming Festival, May Day, Dragon Boat Festival, Mid-Autumn Day and National Day.

The Chinese National Day holiday is called “Golden Week,” or 黄金周 (huáng jīn zhōu) in Chinese, because this is the biggest week for tourism in the country. In fact, the government originally extended the length of this holiday to help encourage the growth of China’s domestic tourism market.

Although CNY officially only lasts for one week, many factories and businesses shut down about 10 days before CNY to allow time for workers to travel home.

The school year in China typically runs from the beginning of September to mid-July. Summer vacation is generally spent in summer classes or studying for entrance exams. The average school day runs from 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., with a two-hour lunch break. The school system in China requires nine years of education.

India did not have a national child policy as of January 2020. Many local laws in India apply penalties for having more than two children. India’s fertility rate was already down to 2.3 children per woman in 2016.

Violators of China’s one-child policy were fined, forced to have abortions or sterilizations, and lost their jobs.

Responding to a petition filed in the Supreme Court, India’s health ministry has said that it will not implement a mandatory two-child policy by denying government jobs, subsidies and certain rights to larger families.

India’s population growth rate is expected to decline to its lowest since the Independence in the 2011-2021 decade, with a decadal growth rate of 12.5%. It will decline further to 8.4% in the 2021-2031 decade, as per the report, which The Wire has seen.

Most of India’s population increase by mid-century will be due to demographic momentum, meaning that even as fertility rates fall below replacement levels, the large numbers of young people will continue to boost the country’s population, says P.
