Dropping out of school has serious consequences for students, their families. Students who decided to drop out of school face social stigma, fewer job opportunities, lower salaries, and higher probability of involvement with the criminal justice system.

Individuals who do not graduate high school are more likely to self-report overall poor health. They also more frequently report suffering from at least 1 chronic health condition—for example, asthma, diabetes, heart disease, high blood pressure, stroke, hepatitis, or stomach ulcers—than graduates.

Employers do not routinely require job applicants to prove that they have earned their high school diploma or GED. However, some employers may request that you furnish a copy of your high school diploma or GED in order to save them time and money on conducting education verification for all applicants.
