There are two main types of shapes, geometric and organic.

The supported spatial element types are points, line strings, and polygons. For example, elements might model star constellations (point clusters), roads (line strings), and county boundaries (polygons).

Updated May 30, 2019. Space, as one of the classic seven elements of art, refers to the distances or areas around, between, and within components of a piece. Space can be positive or negative, open or closed, shallow or deep, and two-dimensional or three-dimensional.

In drawing and painting, negative spaces are actual shapes that share edges with the positive shape — the object or objects you are drawing or painting — thereby creating the outline of your subject. Every positive shape is surrounded by negative space.

In the visual arts, shape is a flat, enclosed area of an artwork created through lines, textures, colours or an area enclosed by other shapes such as triangles, circles, and squares. Specifically, it is an enclosed space, the boundaries of which are defined by other elements of art.

At its most basic, a shape is created when a line is enclosed: a line forms the boundary, and the shape is the form circumscribed by that boundary. Three lines are used to create a triangle while four lines can make a square. Shapes can also be defined by the artist using value, color, or texture to differentiate them.

Color is the element of art that involves light. It is produced when light waves strike an object and are reflected into our eyes. It consists of three properties: hue, intensity, and value. Value — This is the lightness or darkness of a color. A color’s value changes when white or black is added.

Light often describes the light source or light reflected within the composition. In realistic compositions, if there is light, there is shadow.

Visible light is essential for the perception and appreciation of art, but it, too, contributes to degradation and damage of objects. Irreversible damage caused by light can include color fading, yellowing, and embrittlement.

Right now, museums want their replacement LEDs to light a painting like their old incandescent lights. But LEDs have to be specifically engineered to look lose their unnatural fluorescent-like glare. But light is still light, so even with its perks, LEDs still damage paintings.

Most glass does little to protect artwork when exposed to direct, harsh sunlight. Non-glare glass and even specially coated ultraviolet glass does little to protect art from fading.

Exposure to light at night while awake, such as in shift work, may be associated with an increased risk of breast cancer and also cause sleep, gastrointestinal, mood and cardiovascular disorders. UV rays, either from the sun or from artificial sources like tanning beds, can cause sunburn. Exposure to UV rays can cause premature aging of the skin and signs of sun damage such as wrinkles, leathery skin, liver spots, actinic keratosis, and solar elastosis. UV rays can also cause eye problems.

Researchers can successfully grow plants using only artificial light in growth chambers. But sunlight is best for most plants. It’s generally more intense than artificial light, and it’s pretty equally distributed among the different wavelengths that earthly plants have evolved to like best.
