In 1973, Kubrick himself, disheartened by continuing protests, bans A Clockwork Orange in the United Kingdom. The rape of a Dutch girl shortly thereafter, at the hands of men singing “Singing in the Rain” as Alex does, convinces many that Kubrick’s decision was wise.

The importance of evil as well as good in human nature is a fundamental theme of A Clockwork Orange. Alex is despicable because he gives free rein to his violent impulses, but that sense of freedom is also what makes him human. Unlike so many of the adult characters in the film, he, at least, seems exuberantly alive.

A Clockwork Orange, written by Anthony Burgess, is a compelling novel about morality and free will. Unfortunately, it can be a difficult read, especially the first few chapters, as much of the book is narrated in the fictional argot known as Nadsat (the “teenage” language).

In that ultra-violent context, the long, thick eyelashes he wears on one eye seem to simulate sharp blades rather than anything feminine. Simply put, Alex just wants the best of both worlds: the chic and power of the upper class, and the vulgarity and mayhem of the lawless working class.

Alex is 15 years old by the beginning of the book and 17 by the end of it. However, to minimize controversy, his age started from 17 and ended at 19 in the film.

A Clockwork Orange is a story about blood (the spilling of it and the attempts to control that spillage) that fittingly was born in blood, as the author of the original novel, Anthony Burgess, was allegedly inspired to write it by a truly bloody, indeed tragic, incident from his own past.

Banning and censorship history in the US In 1976, A Clockwork Orange was removed from an Aurora, Colorado high school because of “objectionable language”. A year later in 1977 it was removed from high school classrooms in Westport, Massachusetts over similar concerns with “objectionable” language.

The first is that Burgess was given the ultimate deadline for an author, when he was misdiagnosed with terminal brain cancer in 1959. However, the actual source of inspiration for A Clockwork Orange, according to Burgess, was a story that was somehow even more awful than a wrongful diagnosis of terminal cancer.
