In general, a short essay will have at least three full paragraphs; a long essay considerably more. Paragraphs, like the essay overall, also have an expected structure. You should start a new paragraph for each major new idea within your essay, to clearly show the examiner the structure of your argument.

For concise and meaningful writing, do your best to avoid these words and phrases in your admission essays.

• 1) Contractions.
• 2) Idioms.
• 3-5) “So on,” “etc,” “and so forth“
• 6) Clichés.
• 7-11) “Thing,” “stuff,” “good,” “bad,” “big“
• 12) Slang, jargon, teen speak.
• 13) Rhetorical questions.

The five-paragraph essay is a format of essay having five paragraphs: one introductory paragraph, three body paragraphs with support and development, and one concluding paragraph.

Components of a Good Essay The main parts (or sections) to an essay are the intro, body, and conclusion. In a standard short essay, five paragraphs can provide the reader with enough information in a short amount of space.

In its simplest form, an essay can consist of three paragraphs with one paragraph being devoted to each section. Proponents of the five paragraph essay say that the body text should consist of three paragraphs, but in reality, it’s fine to write more or fewer paragraphs in this section.

Here is the basic structure that you need to follow for writing an academic essay:

1. Choose the essay type.
2. Choose an interesting topic.
3. Create an outline.
4. Write an essay introduction.
5. Develop a thesis statement.
6. Compose body paragraphs.
7. Write a strong conclusion.
8. Review your essay.

You can pose a question that will lead to your idea (in which case, your idea will be the answer to your question), or you can make a thesis statement. Understanding essay questions

1. Identify the key words in the question.

Think and write about the detail, and question it where appropriate. Explain: Give enough description or information to make something clear or easy to understand. Explore: Consider an idea or topic broadly, searching out related and/or particularly relevant, interesting or debatable points.

Essay questions that require you to ‘identify’ something in relation to a research topic or argument require you to simply point out and describe the main ideas in a short and coherent way.

“One way to organize an evaluation essay is point-by-point: describe one element of the subject and then evaluate it; present the next element and evaluate it; and so on. Comparison/contrast could be an organizing structure as well, in which you evaluate something by comparing (or contrasting) it to a known item.

Write one sentence for each point to make a 5-sentence introduction:

1. Interest: Make a statement about the ‘thing’ you’re evaluating that you think will be of interest to the reader.
2. Notify: Notify the reader of any background info on the thing you’re evaluating.
3. Translate: Re-state the essay question.

How to Write a Strong Conclusion for Your Essay

1. Restate the thesis by making the same point with other words (paraphrase).
2. Review your supporting ideas.
3. For that, summarize all arguments by paraphrasing how you proved the thesis.
4. Connect back to the essay hook and relate your closing statement to the opening one.

For each paragraph, the reader should be able to identify what your key points are, based on the concluding sentence. It should not include any information that was not discussed in the paragraph. Concluding sentences can start out with phrases such as ‘In conclusion,’ ‘Thus,’ and ‘For this reason. ‘

The function of the essay’s Conclusion is to restate the main argument. It reminds the reader of the strengths of the argument: that is, it reiterates the most important evidence supporting the argument.

“In conclusion” or “To conclude” may be appropriate for an oral presentation, but in writing are considered redundant or overly mechanical. Draft: “However, it is important in arriving at such a conclusion to recognize…” Revision: Just say what we should recognize.

SYNONYMS. conclusion, termination, ending, finish, close, resolution, climax, finale, culmination, denouement. epilogue, coda, peroration.

To close the discussion without closing it off, you might do one or more of the following: Conclude with a quotation from or reference to a primary or secondary source, one that amplifies your main point or puts it in a different perspective.
