Parliament of India consists of the President and two Houses—the Council of States (Rajya Sabha) and the House of the People (Lok Sabha)*.

The business of Parliament takes place in two Houses: the House of Commons and the House of Lords. Their work is similar: making laws (legislation), checking the work of the government (scrutiny), and debating current issues.

In our country, the Parliament consists of two Houses. The two Houses are known as the Council of States (Rajya Sabha) and the House of the People (Lok Sabha).

House of Lords, the upper chamber of Great Britain’s bicameral legislature. Originated in the 11th century, when the Anglo-Saxon kings consulted witans (councils) composed of religious leaders and the monarch’s ministers, it emerged as a distinct element of Parliament in the 13th and 14th centuries.

The Parliament has a sanctioned strength of 543 in Lok Sabha and 245 in Rajya Sabha including the 12 nominees from the expertise of different fields of science, culture, art and history.

Like the upper house, the House of Lords, it meets in the Palace of Westminster. The Commons is an elected body consisting of 650 members known as members of Parliament (MPs). MPs are elected to represent constituencies by the first-past-the-post system and hold their seats until Parliament is dissolved.

The House of Lords is the second chamber of the UK Parliament. It is independent from, and complements the work of, the elected House of Commons. The Lords shares the task of making and shaping laws and checking and challenging the work of the government.

Current sitting members

The reformed House of Lords should have 300 members of whom 240 are “Elected Members” and 60 appointed “Independent Members”. Up to 12 Church of England archbishops and bishops may sit in the house as ex officio “Lords Spiritual”. Elected Members will serve a single, non-renewable term of 15 years.

You can’t buy any royal titles in the UK, such as Duke, Earl, Viscount, Baron (or their female equivalents). It’s illegal for anyone to sell such titles, and they can only be inherited or personally granted by the Queen. These include the titles Lord and Lady.
