February’s statistics brought the number of visitors year to date to 407,259, down 75.9% from the first two months of 2020. The average daily census during the first two months decreased to 85,519 total visitors compared to 260,059 visitors per day.

Year-to-date, visitor arrivals fell 60% to about 847,000. This time last year, more than 2.1 million visitors had arrived in Hawaii. Spending also fell 61% year to date to $1.5 billion.

Through the first five months of 2021, there were 723,536 visitors to Maui, 41% less than the 1,226,608 visitors to Maui in the first five months of 2019. Those visitors spent $1.39 billion in 2021, down 34.5% from the $2.13 billion spent in the first five months of 2019.

The Japanese, with their economic and historical ties to Hawaii and the US as well as relative geographical proximity, make up the largest group of inbound international travelers to the islands, reaching 1,568,609 in 2017. The average Japanese stays only 5 days while other Asians stay over 9.5 days and spend 25% more.

In May, a month before summer tourism season kicked off, an average 58,412 visitors per day were on the island of Maui, compared with 956 in May 2020 and 60,389 visitors per day in May 2019, according to the Hawaii Tourism Authority.

Moana Part 2 will begin with the climax of Moana (Part I) and will feature the return of (Dwayne Johnson) Demigod – Maui. The film then grossed a total of 690.8 million USD globally. We can expect the trailer release of Moana 2, collectively with the theatrical launch of the Summer film.
