NSSL researchers study how thunderstorms produce lightning and how lightning is structured by launching instrumented balloons in field projects. They also look at lightning mapping data to see if there are clues showing a storm is becoming more severe.
Q. Who studies lightning strikes?
NSSL scientists are also researching whether lightning activity can help us predict what storms will do in the future.

Q. How do thunderclouds become charged?
The cold air has ice crystals. The warm air has water droplets. During the storm, the droplets and crystals bump together and move apart in the air. This rubbing makes static electrical charges in the clouds.
Q. How bad does it hurt to get struck by lightning?
According to Dr. Claypool, lightning can cause temporary blindness and can potentially rupture an eardrum. These, however, are minor issues when compared to serious burns, chronic pain, and head trauma that could lead to memory issues and other long-term ailments that can occur if you’re struck by lightning.
Q. How rare is it to get struck by lightning?
According to the National Weather Service, a person has a 1-in-15,300 chance of getting struck by lightning in their lifetime, defined as an 80-year span.
Q. Has anyone ever died from lightning in a pool?
But according to Aquatic Safety Research Group, “There are no documented reports of fatal lightning strikes at indoor swimming pools. None! Ever!”
Q. What happens when you get hit by lightning?
Of every 10 people struck, nine will survive. But they could suffer a variety of short- and long-term effects: cardiac arrest, confusion, seizures, dizziness, muscle aches, deafness, headaches, memory deficits, distractibility, personality changes and chronic pain, among others.
Q. What happens if your house is hit by lightning?
What happens when lightning strikes a house? If your home gets struck by lightning, you will hear a very loud, powerful boom that might shake your entire house. When a lightning charge travels through electrical wiring, it can cause an explosive surge. This may cause a fire and almost certainly will destroy the wires.
Q. What happens before you get struck by lightning?
Just before lightning actually strikes, static energy is going to fill the air. If you look at your arms, you may see the hair on your arms standing on end. You may also feel a physical tingling sensation throughout your body, especially in your extremities.
