Raleigh (actually the whole Triangle area in general) is a little more laid back and artsy. Charlotte has more of a big city feel and Raleigh is more suburban. Charlotte has the real downtown area.. in comparision downtown Raleigh is a laugher if that is your thing.

Raleigh is considerably safer than Charlotte, but seconding a previous opinion, Charlotte isn’t particularly unsafe. There are only a handful of truly bad areas there, where you’re coming from in Pittsburgh is a much more violent city than either Charlotte or Raleigh… 5.

Charlotte is 3.3% less expensive than Raleigh. Charlotte housing costs are 16.5% less expensive than Raleigh housing costs. Health related expenses are 7.3% more in Charlotte.
